INFORMATION REQUESTS TO THE SHIP'S COMPUTER

A print and online Star Trek: The Next Generation fan zine.

This is a zine project I did in 2023, featuring two zines in both printed and online formats. I made the first of the two zines, 'Whatever Happened to Capitalism?' as part of Wellington Zinefest's fanzine competition in 2023. I followed it up the same year with 'The Irish Unification of 2024'.

Both zines follow the format of a dialogue between a crew member and a starship's computer, with the crew member asking for historical data and the computer giving responses. I took details from Star Trek canon - like the Irish unification of 2024 mentioned in the TNG episode 'The High Ground', and the fact that the Federation operates in a non-monetary, non-scarcity model - and wrote an imaginary history of how the situation came to be.

This project was an opportunity for me to combine my nostalgia for 90s Star Trek with a desire to comment on what future is possible. Making the online version was also an opportunity for me to learn more about creating with HTML and CSS, and to live out my childhood dream of having a workable interface using the iconic LCARS design from Star Trek TNG, thanks to a template designed by thelcars.com.
